I saw the answer in his hungry gaze. I slid my hand down and threaded one finger through his belt loop, and the other through Owen’s. With both in tow, I stumbled off the dance floor.

Through the crush of bodies, past the impassive, sunglass-wearing sentry by the door, up the stairs and into the night. I had hoped the cool air would soothe my overheated skin, maybe help clear my head and ease the insistent pulse of need that hammered through me. Instead, the soft breeze licked over me, and I burned hotter.

Out on the sidewalk, Harlan stopped me with a hand on my arm, turning me to face him. “Violet,” he said, his voice thick. “I don’t want you to do anything you might regret. We can—”

I lifted onto my toes and swallowed his words with my mouth. He tasted like whiskey and a hint of orange, and he stepped into me, pressing me flush with the wall of the building.

“Nope,” Owen said, grabbing each of our hands and tugging us apart. “I’m not opposed to public displays, but we are not doing this against a brick wall.”

Harlan chuckled, and I stumbled forward as Owen pulled us down the street. “We have a perfectly serviceable bed just a few blocks from here.”

Bed. My brain short-circuited at the word. Owen, and Harlan, and a bed, and the entire night stretched out in front of us. You deserve it, Lainey had said. And whether or not she was right, I wanted it.

The three blocks passed in a haze of anticipation. I couldn’t tear my eyes from the broad swath of Owen’s back in front of me, shoulders shifting beneath the tight black t-shirt. Harlan’s hand on my hip burned like a brand.

It seemed only moments later that we were stumbling up the stairs, key cards fumbled out of pockets, and then we were inside. My breathing was loud in the quiet room, and my back hit the wall as Owen crowded into my space. But rather than kiss me, they ducked down a little to meet my eye, and their expression was unexpectedly serious.

“Violet,” they said. “Do you want this?”

I wasn’t even sure what this was, but whatever it was, I wanted it. I nodded again, the movement fast and jerky.

“Say it.”

“Yes,” I breathed. “I want it.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m sure.”

The serious expression melted into a cocky smirk. “Then we’ve got to do something about that dress.”

Their hands came to my shoulders; their fingers slid beneath the multitude of straps and peeled them down. The fabric went slack as the straps gave way. With the top of the dress pooling over the rise of my breasts, a hair’s breadth away from falling completely, Owen met my eyes once more.

I nodded.

And Owen released the fabric, letting it slip off completely. No one spoke. I was wearing almost nothing beneath, just a flimsy pair of black lace underwear. As the cool air met my skin, heat rushed to my cheeks. It felt strange to be standing there, next to naked, with both of them fully dressed.
